Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin is a skin condition. This means it is a developed skin concern.  Where DRY skin is considered as oil deficient, dehydrated skin is water deficient.

This condition occurs as a result of insufficient levels of water being maintained in the skin.

Dehydrated skin often feels flaky, taut and itchy. It may be caused by a number of factors such as the use of stripping cleansers and harsh soaps, over exfoliation of the skin, poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, climate change and over exposure to the sun.

Dehydrated skin appears crepe-like in appearance with fine lines being more visible.  In some cases, the dehydrated skin compensates for the water loss by over producing oils, which is why dehydrated skin may sometimes appear oily.

There are ways to overcome dehydrated skin. Increase levels of water taken up by the skin. In some instances, a lifestyle change may be necessary, as may be an adjustment in skin care routine.

Consuming sufficient levels of water is important for overall health and well being, however, consuming more water into your diet may not solely overcome dehydrated skin.

The reason for this is that the skin is the last organ to receive water when ingested, meaning that only a small percentage of water consumed may actually reach the skin.  Reach for topically applied skin care products that are hydrophilic in nature, meaning they bind and retain water in the skin.
